🔍 About the Mission
Q: What is Vincent’s Pokémon Trade-Up Journey?
A: Vincent’s Pokémon Trade-Up Journey is a mission built around the power of community and compassion. It began with one simple idea — to trade Pokémon cards up in value, step by step, to raise funds for an accessible home and vehicle for my son, Vincent, who lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Every trade, donation, and connection contributes to his mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Q: How did this project begin?
A: When Vincent’s condition progressed and his mobility declined, I realized that no safety net existed to meet his growing needs. Rather than wait for help that might never come, I created this project as a way to turn the Pokémon hobby — something that’s brought us both joy — into a tool for real-world change.
Q: Who runs the mission, and how is it managed?
A: I’m Steven Bates, Vincent’s father and the project’s organizer. Every trade, post, and event appearance is personally handled or overseen by me. We document each step publicly for accountability and transparency.
Q: What are the main goals of the Trade-Up Journey?
A: Our short-term goal is to raise funds through card trades, donations, and collaborations to secure an accessible home and vehicle for Vincent. The long-term goal is to evolve this mission into a registered nonprofit — The Vincent Hogan-Bates Quality of Life Foundation — to help other families facing similar challenges.
Q: Is this an official charity or a personal project?
A: Currently, it’s a personal mission in motion. All funds and trades go directly toward Vincent’s care, mobility, and accessibility needs. The nonprofit structure is a future step, but transparency and integrity guide us right now just as strictly as any registered charity.
💸 Donations & Funding
Q: If I make a financial donation to Vincent, where does it go, and how does it help?
A: Every contribution directly supports the mission and Vincent’s quality of life. Funds are primarily used to acquire trading cards or sealed products that help us progress the Trade-Up Journey, either through reinvestment or strategic trades. At times, donations may also be used to bring joy or comfort to Vincent personally — whether that’s adding a card to his favorite Jolteon collection or enjoying a small treat together.
Every gesture, big or small, plays a role in improving his daily life and well-being.
Q: Can I see how donations are being used?
A: While we don’t yet have a formal tracking dashboard, we maintain transparency through consistent documentation on YouTube. Each major trade or contribution is shared publicly across our social channels and in video updates (unless anonymity is requested). You can also follow our collection’s real-time progress using the Collectr app, where growth reflects the direct impact of community support.
Q: Is my donation tax-deductible?
A: Not yet. We’re not a registered charity at this stage, so contributions are considered personal gifts, not tax-deductible donations. That said, we’re working toward nonprofit status to change that in the future.
Q: Are there other ways to help besides donating money?
A: Absolutely. You can trade cards or sealed products with us, share our story by reposting or sharing a video with your friends, partner with us at events, or even donate packs for us to giveaway at shows. Every act of kindness fuels the mission.
Q: How are trade values tracked or verified?
A: All trades are appraised using multiple tools — including verified eBay sold listings, market apps like Collectr and ALT, and collector input from trusted partners. No trade is ever inflated or misrepresented.
Q: What happens to cards or products that are donated but not traded?
A: Anything not traded up immediately is carefully stored until the right opportunity arises. Sometimes smaller contributions may be used for giveaways or as thank-you gifts at events, some donors request Vincent open the packs — but they're never misused.
💳 Trading & Transparency
Q: How do I make a trade with Vincent’s project?
A: You can reach out directly through our contact form, social channels, or at live TCG events. We may also use trusted platforms like Veriswap to make remote trades secure and verifiable.
Q: How do I know my card or item will reach you safely?
A: Items are shipped using tracked and insured methods whenever possible, and we’re happy to provide photo or video confirmation upon arrival. Maintaining trust and transparency is a top priority.
Q: What happens after I trade or donate an item?
A: Once the trade is confirmed, it’s added to our inventory and shared publicly. If your item plays a part in a future trade or sale, we can include your name (if you wish) in the project credits and timeline.
Q: Can I trade sealed products, not just cards?
A: Yes, sealed products are often even better for trading up — especially when they hold long-term value or collector appeal.
Q: Do you ever sell the cards directly, or is everything traded up?
A: The primary focus is trading up, but in some cases, we may sell items to generate funds when a trade opportunity isn’t practical. Every sale is made transparently and with intent to further Vincent’s accessibility goals.
Q: Where can I follow the trade history or updates?
A: You can follow the full journey across Instagram, YouTube, and Discord — links are available via our site’s QR code or Linktree.
🎥 Content & Community
Q: Why do you film the trades and events?
A: Transparency! We want people to see what’s happening, to know their support has real impact. It also helps show the heart of the community — collectors, kids, and families — all helping one another.
Q: Where can I watch the videos or see the updates?
A: Our main hub is YouTube (@CoolTrainerVincent) where we post videos of us actively attending trade shows, partner highlights, our Discord server is usually where the updates get posted first. Short-form updates appear on Instagram stories and reels and sometimes TikTok.
Q: Are all shows filmed?
A: Not all — for example, Kids Collector Day is a “no-film” event to protect the privacy of children. 🚫🎥Otherwise, we record what we can responsibly.
Q: How can I meet Vincent and Dad at an event?
A: We attend most major central Ontario TCG events throughout the year. Follow our socials for confirmed appearances and schedules.
Q: How can event organizers get involved?
A: We welcome collaboration! Many Ontario event organizers — including Cardfesta, NACE, Mewtopia, Collectors Clash, NTCE, Run the Hobby, Collector Verse Expo, and Kwon Authentics — already support our cause.
🧭 Values & Integrity
Q: How do you make sure this project stays transparent and honest?
A: Every trade, donation, and transaction that we can capture is documented. We never accept or portray anything that didn’t happen.
No fabrications. No assumptions. Honesty and accountability are the foundation of this mission.
Q: Are you affiliated with any card companies or grading services?
A: We collaborate with companies and vendors within the hobby — like Collectr and Collector's Realm — when opportunities arise, but we’re independent and not financially tied to any marketing, sales or grading platform at this time.
Q: How do you decide what trades are fair or beneficial?
A: We balance value, liquidity, and long-term growth. A fair trade benefits both sides, but our priority is always how that trade moves the mission forward for Vincent.
Q: What does “raising funds for accessibility” actually look like?
A: It means every trade and dollar moves toward concrete goals — funding a home, building ramps, securing a wheelchair van, and ensuring Vincent can live with dignity and independence.
Q: How can I verify your story or learn more about Vincent’s condition?
A: You can learn more about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy through trusted organizations like Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) or Muscular Dystrophy Canada. We’re always transparent about Vincent’s condition and journey. If in-depth verification is required, medical documentation can be shared.
